Guestpost + Giveaway: Wolfie World Tour Day 3 – CONNECT THE WOLFIES

My first day to host the Wolfie World Tour is here! Welcome Vivian, visitors and of course Shaun. I love that Vivian shows in this post how both series are connected. I must honestly admit I noticed the mentions of Shaun in WOLF SIGNS and WOLF FLIGHT but reading those books I was so focused on TJ (uhm I might have a bit of a crush on TJ…) that I didn’t really notice Shaun until I was reading TJ’s book. And boy did I notice him then! I think I immediately asked Vivian if there was going to be a book about him and she confirmed that, once again making me a happy reader.

Viv, the floor is yours!

The Takhini Wolves series is a part of the Granite Lake world, and there’s a lot of overlap, not the least being the familiar character of Shaun Stevens as the hero of BLACK GOLD. I thought it would be fun to show you a few glimpses today of Shaun in the previous four GLW books.

First time he’s mentioned? Bottom of the first page of WOLF SIGNS. Yup, Shaun’s been around for a looooooong time.

Robyn paced a few steps away before turning back to face him, her hands flowing smoothly as she spoke to her brother in American Sign Language. “I understand, Tad. You need to take the job. I’m still going to Granite.”

“No way. You can’t go by yourself.”

“You have.”

“But that’s different, Robyn.”

“Don’t be a jerk. I don’t have a penis so I can’t go backcountry alone?”

Tad raised his eyebrows. “It’s not the lack of plumbing, sis, and you know it. I very seldom go bush alone and if I do meet anyone, it’s not a big deal. I’m male, I’m strong and I’m not deaf. How do you plan on talking to strangers?”

Robyn threw a pillow his way before lifting her hands to sign at him. “I’ll take some notepads. What are the chances of meeting anyone at Granite this time of year? We always go in February because no one else does. I’m packed, the food is packed, and I’ve got time off work from the bakery. You even booked a helicopter ride in for me with your buddy Shaun. I’ve never gotten to fly in before.

In WOLF FLIGHT, we discover that Shaun is more than just a buddy, he’s actually the business partner of hero Tad, whose sister Robyn got the helicopter flight in that previous quote. Shaun likes the ladies, even considers hitting on Robyn (if Tad wasn’t very insistent that idea was a hell no). Shaun’s all about friends, not so much about pack. He’s the kind of guy you’d like by your side in a tough spot. Blunt, even-keeled, laid-back.

Bloody wolf hormones.

“Doesn’t it bother you?” Tad asked. “Being out of control of your own destiny?”

“What are you talking about?”

“The wolf. The way being a wolf changes your whole life.” Tad stared into space, his fingers fidgeting with the arms of his chair.

Shaun scrunched up his face. “Uh, no… I mean, so I can change into a wolf. It’s no big deal. It’s not like I have uncontrollable urges to howl or shift involuntarily when the moon is full. My wolf is just a part of who I am. An amazing, completely honest part of me.”

Tad snorted. “You’ve never been so poetic in your life. Damn it, I’m talking about the stupid wolf hormones. Don’t try to tell me they don’t dictate your life. They sure as hell do mine. We can’t even decide who to marry without our wolves approving.”

His partner laughed as he leaned back on the table. “Mates? You’re worried about finding a mate again. Tad? Holy crap, you need to get laid.”

Finally, in WOLF TRACKS, Shaun is instrumental in getting hero TJ and his sweetie some needed one-on-one time so they can figure out their interesting relationship. This is a bigger deal than you’d think at first—considering that wolves operate on a strict hierarchy, Shaun basically had to stay hidden for the duration in order to keep TJ and Pam’s location a secret. Otherwise he could have been ordered to spill the beans early. It takes a true friend to be willing to defy all the Alpha wolves in the entire north.

The loudening flap flap of the propeller blades reached them, and Pam’s eyes widened. “What’s he doing?”

She scrambled to the side, and her jaw fell open as the chopper lifted. The air pressure flattened them to the ground as Shaun got away. TJ waved at his friend as the aircraft rose, hovering over the field for a moment before rotating and taking off into the distance.

“What is going on? Stop it…come back.” Pam ran after the helicopter, waving her arms frantically before returning, her beautiful brown eyes wide. “He left us. What is he doing?”

TJ stood and pulled her back into his arms. “Don’t worry, it’s okay. He’ll be back.”

She relaxed. “Well, that’s good. How long do we have before he returns?”

“A week.”

In terms of how else the series mesh, Shaun and Tad were both a part of one of the Takhini packs (I mentioned that at the first stop of the tour—two packs in Whitehorse) based out of Whitehorse, but they usually lived/slept close to where their planes were stored—the community of Haines Junction. This small Yukon town is the junction point for continuing up the Alaskan highway to Anchorage, or turning southward to the ocean and Haines—where the Granite Lake pack now resides.

Other than Shaun, the similarities in the stories…hmmm, sarcasm? Light-hearted discussions? The setting of the Yukon and Alaska wilderness, and gold rush towns such as Dawson City. A happily ever after—and this time because the story is longer, there’s more time for all of it. More adventures, more confusion. More wolfies.

Come back tomorrow for an excerpt with Shaun and TJ from BLACK GOLD. Be sure to leave a comment here to be included in the draw for the Grand prize of a $50 gift certificate. Also, check out my blog for the daily Friends of the Wolfies contest!

  1. If I love a secondary character I am thrilled when they get their chance to fully shine. It seems only right that we get to hear, read, their story.marypres(AT)gmail(DOT)com

  2. There are some really awesome secondary characters out there. When they get their own story it's a great way to get to know them better. And it usually leads to a really wonderful book.

  3. I'm quite happy when a secondary character gets his own book; especially, if he's snarky, smarty-pants or is brooding and mysterious. I want to know more about him. Thanks,Tracey Dbooklover0226 at gmail dot com

  4. I like it when a secondary character gets their own book. There are some good secondary characters out there that needs their own story, which then reveals more about themselves.

  5. I like it, because not only I get a chance to know more about that character, but also explore that fictional world further and maybe from another point of view.spamscape [at] gmail [dot] com

  6. I love it, when a series continues with a new hero or heroine you already know and like, and you also get an update of the previous couple. Your wolves sound like fun.

  7. Absolutely!! Book series are the gift that keeps on giving. You meet lots of characters in a first of a series. You get to know one or two characters really well. You form opinions about supporting characters, and sometimes you wonder what they're like. When subsequent books are released and you get to know a few more characters in detail, you get to see if your opinions were right. I especially like it when those other characters surprise me and get me to change my mind about them once I know more about them. :DI love every single one of Vivian's books that I've read! I read the Granite Lake stories many times each and am really looking forward to Black Gold as it's a longer format especially as Viv is so good with the descriptive yumminess!

  8. Like many of the others, when the secondary characters are as interesting as Vivian's books, and many other fave authors, I absolutely love it when they get a story of their own! It's a three fold plus, when you already know you enjoy the author's work, and since this is a character they created, you can expect a great story for the secondaries since there is a good chance the character means as much to the author as they do to the readers!

  9. The thing I love most about series is that you usually get to see a bit of the future heroes in the earlier books. I love it when you fall for a character (like TJ!!) and then you are finally able to read their story :o) I also like it when you get to see how things are panning out for past heroes & heroines in the later books too.It was great to be reminded of the previous times we met Shaun & I'm very excited about reading his story

  10. The best stories for me are when I love all the characters, not just the main ones. That beings the case I love it when a secondary character gets their owns story, not all should but the ones who were memorable when they were first introduced. It's great re-visiting a world and seeing familiar faces again.

  11. Always enjoy when secondary characters get their own stories, because sometimes for me, they are the ones that captivate my attention and I want to know more about them.skpetal at hotmail dot com

  12. Hi Vivian,I like series books that include everyone all the time. It that means one book is more about one that the other is okay because its all good :)Macypsigirl74(at)yahoo(dot)com

  13. I love a good series, and my favorite part is when a character from a previous story now gets their own story. Even better, when previous characters come back for a visit.caity_mack at yahoo dot com

  14. There are many books especially in a series where I really love the secondary characters and I would really like to hear/see their story in their own book. Thanks for the giveaway!artgiote at gmail dot com

  15. Of course we love it when a secondary character gets their own book! & since Vivian is so awesome she includes updates to past H&H couples that really keep us invested in the continuing story lines.

  16. I love to follow characters through a series, with earlier protagonists/couples showing up in secondary characters books…It keeps the world turning :)Thanks for the snippets from the earlier books, I plan to reread the GL books to get ready for Black Gold :)maryjooller at yahoo dot com

  17. Hi Vivian,I absolutely love it when a secondary character makes me fall for them… and then for them to get their own story is even better. Some of the best books have been spin offs of the original story with the secondary character from the first book becoming the main character for the next book.Thank you for the hop. Its fun! ^_^reneebennett35 at yahoo dot com

  18. I love series that have secondary characters who later get their own HEA. I also love to see previous characters make cameos or be secondary characters, so we can get updates on them after their HEA.June M.manning_j2004 at yahoo dot com

  21. I do enjoy a secondary charter getting his own story, especially if I like the character. I have not read about the Wolfies before and would like to give them a try. Thank you for the twitter invite and giveaway opportunity. dz59001[at]gmail[dot]com

  22. I love it when secondary characters get brought into the story and end up with their own. I am a wolf lover since I was a little girl, and have been fortunate enough to travel to see them in the wild.We also have a wolf pack that travels on the back side of my mountain here in the interior of Alaska…*S*I love wolf shifter stories and I am so glad that I just discovered your series just recently. I so want your series and can't wait to read them.Thank you, and please enter me…*s*Darcypommawolf @hotmail.com

  23. I, too, love a secondary character getting their own story. What I don't like is having to wait for it! I want them all, and I want them now! :) I have preordered many in a series as soon as they come up, then I wait…and wait…and wait. Then I read! and wait, again. So I might actually have to go back and reread.

  24. Secondary characters often make or break a book. And I agree with some of the other commenters, it's really fun when some these folks get their own stories, often after appearing in many books in a series.Again, congrats!

  25. I LOVE secondary characters– to me they add SO much to the book, and when they get their own book I am THRILLED. Look at the response to T.J. and Shaun– we LOVE them, and couldn't wait to read their stories:) Plus they get those beautiful covers– dang. I'm SO there on Shaun's story.wayfaringwriter at gmail dot com

  26. I love it. Keeps a series alive and lets me follow the stories of people I am familar with. It's like finding out how your friends are doing since you last saw them.

  27. Absolutely love it. If I connect with the secondary character then I know I'm going to want to go on and read his or her story as well. These characters grow on you, especially in series books :) I love when we get to see familiar characters making visits in the stories. Carol LLucky4750 (at) aol (dot) com

  28. Yes, I love it when secondary characters I've grown to love eventually get their own books because I would have already gotten to know them a bit as secondary characters and so as I grow to like them, I would want to know more about them, to know what their stories are.chibipooh(at)gmail(dot)com

  29. I love it when the secondary characters I like get their own book because I would love to learn more about them and see them be happy. It also adds more details to an overarching storyline if there are some extended side stories.angeldream3[AT]gmail[DOT]com

  30. I love when that happens, I feel like I get to continue on a story that I really enjoyed. Plus it is always cool to get a new perspective on their stories.thegirlonfire27 at gmail dot com

  31. I do still really enjoy books about the secondary characters. While its not the same feeling as with the original, it's still in the same world. I love that. Safe. Viviendeadtossedwaves at gmail dot com

  32. I do like when secondary characters get their stories. One of my favorites is Sarah from the Guild Hunter series. She gets a novella in Must Love Hellhounds. It told how she met her guy. Yes I loved it.usignolc(at)yahooDOTcom

  33. Absolutely!! I LOVE it when that happens and eagerly follow a series to see that promise fulfilled! Viv's wolves are a great example. Or Mari Carr's Collins family–gotta read about each of the sibs! I have always been a sucker for a series :)f dot chen at comcast dot net
