Review: DIRTY BEAUTIFUL by Jodie Becker

Disillusioned by love, Erica has tasted the bitter pill of betrayal and wonders if she’s enough for one man. When a hot guy moves in next door, Erica decides to settle for good old-fashioned lust. What starts out as a simple seduction quickly evolves, and Erica is fast finding out Dylan is dangerous not only to her libido, but her heart as well.

Recently retired from the adult-film industry, Dylan hopes for a fresh start in Templeton where his porn persona, Drake Van Wulf, is unknown. His new neighbor is unlike the women he’s accustomed to, but she stirs his blood nonetheless. His rule not to get involved is quickly tested by Erica and her lush curves. Unable to withstand her allure, Dylan finds himself wanting more from Erica than just her body. He wants her heart also.

With the secret of his past hanging in the shadows, Dylan’s about to find out if love truly conquers all.

First line:
The three-bedroom cottage was a far cry from the condo Dylan owned—a fixer-upper in need of some serious work, but something he wanted to throw himself into.

Memorable Scenes:
– the panties/underwear stealing terrier > hilarious!
– Erica and Dylan’s first kiss > I’ve been reading some great kissing scenes lately but this one takes the no. 1 spot
– the part describing Dylan’s mom’s death > yes, I cried
– Dylan having a conversation with his dick > hilarious moment no. 2

Erica Bracken is a second grade teacher. She’s the epitome of wholesome but beneath her kind veneer there’s a witty and sharp-minded woman who will not be made a fool.

Dylan Marsden is retired adult films star Drake Van Wulf and a carpenter. He’s a lonely hands-on type of guy with healthy sexual appetite to the point it annoys him a little.

I loved the incorporation of the secondary cast in the story. There were some characters I loved instantly, some interesting characters that grew on me gradually and some characters I just had to dislike. And a little birdie told me there’s a second book in the making so I really wonder whom it will be about because there are a few likely candidates and I look forward to one possible couple in particular. (Meanwhile, because it took me so long to write and post this review, the second book is released, DIRTY INTERLUDES and it’s about one of the characters I hoped would get his own book: Max!)

The reason I picked this book was partly because of the genre (hey, it’s contemporary romance) and the title (anything with Dirty in the title attracts my attention) but it was mainly the premise: a retired adult industry actor finds love in a small town. This was so new to me, I just had to buy and read this book. And let me tell you, I have not a single regret that I did!

This review is going to be slightly different from my normal ones. While reading it was how I took my notes so keeping in that vain I’ll just throw a keyword out there and then elaborate.

It’s set in a small town in Georgia and from the writing this really showed. It felt like I was in that town observing its inhabitants, how they were linked and witnessing their interactions.

It was subtle at times, laugh-out-loud at others. The way to this romance reader’s heart is through humor and Jodie Becker certainly provided that in DIRTY BEAUTIFUL.

Wow, Jodie Becker knows how to write kisses…who needs full-out sex scenes when you can write kisses like that. They were brilliantly written: sensual, luscious and erotic. They completely blew my mind…

Another box was ticked as next to the humor and heat there was emotional depth too! The characterization was excellently done and like with the setting I while reading the feeling that I was really getting to know the main characters was coming through strongly.

Issues!(both of the characters and mine)
At one point Dylan started to get a little on my nerves. He was not telling Erica about his past, lying to her about the true nature of his relationship with Ruby, yet urging Erica to not keep secrets from him anymore. And the Mary Mae thing at the end! I kept thinking: ‘No Dylan, don’t do that!’
In my opinion Dylan got off easy and it seemed like Erica did the groveling at the end but the rest of the book was good enough for me to overlook this as a minor issue that didn’t ruin my enjoyment of this wonderful and touching story.

Adding up the way this book affected me in regards to the above keywords DIRTY BEAUTIFUL should be titled Dirty Awesome! Next installment please!

Favorite Quotes:

Erica knew she shouldn’t perv on people, but she couldn’t help herself. Her new neighbor was sex on a stick.

Dylan stepped even closer, his breath against her ear. “If you don’t tell me to back off, I think I might kiss you.”
“Why?” she asked breathlessly.
He licked the lobe of her ear. “Because I wanna know if you taste like peaches.”

Their lips fused together again and his tongue stroked the crease of her mouth in supplication. He flicked the tip of her tongue with his own, creating a burst of sensual delight as he teased her.
This man made love with his mouth! Thrusting and withdrawing, entangling and sliding. Everything he did was pure decadence.

He tasted her passion, a subtle shudder passed through her body. Seducing her with his mouth, he teased her tongue with his. Imitating the primitive motion of sex, he thrust and retreated in a slow, timeless pace. Each withdrawal was accompanied by the soft closure of his mouth, punctuated by the wet, erotic sound of desire.

Judging by the way he kissed, sex with him would be hot, heavy and animalistic. She shuddered at the thought and rolled onto her side. The digital clock glared at her. Twelve thirty. Two hours had passed and she still didn’t feel even close to drifting off. Drawn tight like a guitar string, her body vibrated with unspent tension.

hand drew circles along her inner thigh, while the other massaged her abdomen. Rapture rose and fell in excruciating degrees. Ecstasy hovered over her skin. The gentle rise of pleasure flowed over her in a stream of liquid mercury.
