Guest-Post: Lorelie Brown (aka Katie Porter) talks roleplaying and research

Katie Porter is the co-writing team of Lorelie Brown and Carrie Lofty, friends and critique partners of six years.

Both are multi-published in several romance genres. Carrie has an MA in history, while Lorelie is a US Army veteran. Generally a high-strung masochist, Carrie loves weight training but she has no fear of gross things like dissecting formaldehyde sharks. Her two girls are not appreciative. Lorelie, a laid-back sadist, would rather grin maniacally when Carrie works out. Her three boys love how she screams like a little girl around spiders.

Yesterday I ARC-reviewed DOUBLE DOWN here on the blog and I loved it so I’m honoured to welcome one of the authors who is Katie Porter on the blog today
Please help me welcome half of this fab writing team: Ms. Lorelie Brown. She was sweet enough to share a bit of how Ryan’s book came to be and how she and Carrie Lofty researched the roleplaying.

When Carrie Lofty and I sat down to write Double Down, we actually worked backwards in a way. We knew we wanted at least three books in the Vegas Top Guns series, and we knew that Leah and Jon would make up books two and three. We already knew that Captain Leah Girardi would run into a ghost from her past who’d bring with him a lovely revelation: a kind of sexuality that would fit her just right. Leah was a femdom just waiting to find her perfect palace guard sub. We also knew Captain Jon Carlisle was a kinkster who absolutely loved his dirty side and was searching for the perfect woman to match.

Major Ryan Haverty was a little bit of a more difficult case. We figured out he was a straight arrow who needed a sweet and innocent girl-next-door type. Made to order, we came up with Cassandra Whitman, waitress and part time art gallery employee. So why did Carrie and I find ourselves spit balling a scene where sweet, shy Cass was dressed as high class Vegas call girl? Not only that, we figured she’d be enjoying every second of it. Maybe she found wearing an outfit really freeing? She enjoyed dressing up and role-playing, had something of a blast. More than something—she found it absolutely perfect for her. When Double Down starts out, Cassandra is a good girl. The type who doesn’t cuss and who really, really wouldn’t sleep with a guy on the first date. Except what if she found role play costumes so freeing that she felt like she could do those things she’d always wanted to, but never quite been bold enough?

Naturally the conflict (considering that we were sketching out our plans for an erotic romance) would be if Ryan were burying a load of shame over his kink. We considered the over all arc of the series that we were looking at: Jon knew his kinkiness and had a great time at it, while Leah learns her kink but embraces it wholeheartedly once she finds it. That left us with a hole. A guy who thought his kink was a problem. Hah! It all went together.

That left Ryan buttoned up, straight arrow and without any outlet for his absolutely burning sexuality. He’s like a powder keg. All he needs is red-headed Cass to light his fire and he’d burn.

Once we figured out that conflict between Ryan and Cass, the rest was easy. Naturally you can’t plan a role-playing fetish book without having a French maid. It’s a thing. A hot as hell thing! From there, we kinda just hit the online shopping sites and rolled with it. A few clicks and a google and we were neck-deep in costumes. You wouldn’t believe how many role-play costumes are out there! (And then there’s like four times as many sex toys. What? It’s research.) But our absolute favorite costumes are the ones Ryan and Cass use in their big finale—just before their happy ending.

But I’m not giving that one away so easily. You’ll have to read Double Down to find out! I promise you won’t regret it.

The “Vegas Top Guns” series of erotic romances features U.S. Air Force pilots from the 64th Aggressor Squadron. Set against the hot, wicked backdrop of Sin City, these uninhibited romantic partnerships explore the many forms desire can take—including role-playing, erotic power exchange, male submission, and voyeurism.

Book 1: Double Down
(Pre-)Order: Amazon | B&N | Samhain

As part of the 64th Aggressor Squadron, Major Ryan “Fang” Haverty flies like the enemy to teach Allied pilots how not to die. The glittering excess of the Strip can’t compare to the glowing jet engines of his F-16. But a sexy, redheaded waitress in seamed stockings? Now she gets his blood pumping.
Cassandra Whitman’s good-girl ways haven’t earned any slack from her manager ex-boyfriend, or prevented a bad case of frazzle from holding down two and a half jobs. She sure wouldn’t mind letting the handsome Southern charmer shake up her routine.
Their wild weekend lives up to Sin City’s reputation. Especially when they discover a matched passion for roleplaying. For Cass, it’s an exciting departure from her normal, shy persona. But for Ryan, it triggers memories of a time when his fetish drove away the woman he loved—leaving him reluctant to risk a repeat performance.
Except Cass refuses to settle for ordinary ever again. She’s about to show the man with hair-trigger hands that she’s got a few surprise moves of her own.

Warning: This book contains dirty-hot roleplaying, featuring an all-alpha fighter pilot and an ambitious waitress with a fabulous imagination. Also: dressing-room sex, a plaid schoolgirl skirt, and a sprinkling of spankings.
