Sera Sinclaire is a New Orleans rarity: a submissive coyote trapped in a town overrun by dominant shapeshifters. Worse, she lacks the willpower to deny the alphas-in-shining-armor who need her soothing presence, even when their protectiveness threatens to crush her hard-won self-reliance.
The only shifter she doesn’t want to push away is Julio Mendoza, a wolf so dominant he’s earned a place on the Southeast council.
Julio doesn’t have the luxury of indulging in the vacation his psychic shrink insists he needs. He can’t turn his back on responsibilities he’s beginning to wish he’d never shouldered. When an obsessive ex endangers Sera, though, instinct drives him to get her out of town. Watching her come to life outside the city makes him feel like he’s finally done something right, and her touch ignites desire he doesn’t want to ignore.
But soon, lighthearted flirting becomes a dangerous game of seduction, where every day spent falling into each other is another day avoiding the truth. Sera’s ex isn’t the only one who’d disapprove of their relationship. There are wolves who would kill to get Sera out of Julio’s life—starting with his own blood kin.
Contains endless summer road trips, family drama, redneck werewolves, sexual power games and a taboo love affair between a submissive coyote who’s among the last of her kind and a dominant wolf who loves his heroine’s ass. Literally.

“Try to relax, sweetheart.”
“Julio Mendoza.” Kelly Sinclaire smiled. “Welcome to the family.”
– the scene on the counter of the vacation bungalow on the beach > hot damn!
– the scene in the woods after their run at Sydney’s estate > double hot damn! And talk about a sex scene that adds to the characters’ emotional development
Seraphina ‘Sera’ Sinclaire is a submissive coyote shifter, on the run from an abusive ex-husband. She’s submissive but has a core of strength that just blew me away.
Julio Mendoza is a wolf shifter and precog. He’s an ex-firefighter and now member of Southeast council. He’s very alpha, dominant and protective.
Sera and Julio are each other’s opposites: Sera is strength wrapped in vulnerability and submission. Julio is vulnerability enveloped in dominance and strength. I loved the chemistry between them and their story was one I was anticipating from the moment I read DEADLOCK.
IMPULSE picks up the story shortly after the point where CIPHER ended. And I was immediately drawn back into the fascinating world of shifters and shifter politics I’ve grown to love in the Southern Arcana series. It seems like this series is getting better and better with every new installment. I love how earlier main and secondary characters pop up and are fulfilling important supporting roles in other books.
The romance was excellent, unique and hot. It was set up to gradually take you to a point of no return, a point you just knew was coming. And when it came it blew me away. The chemistry between Sera and Julio was strong and powerful both emotionally and sexually and it worked splendidly with the rest of the story. I also had the feeling it was a tad dirtier and more explicit than in the earlier books in the series. This is a development I heartily support.
The action and plot were awesome. Well-dosed it had an enormous impact on me. I enjoyed it just as much as I did the excellent romance. Though I’m not a big fan of extended world-building, I just love the world-building in this series. It’s intricate and intriguing, yet subtle and never overwhelming. And with every book there are new, interesting developments that pull me in deeper into this fascinating world and make me anticipate the next book even more.
Once again I am intrigued with the plot and the world, moved by the romance and blown away by the action. IMPULSE, next to DEADLOCK and CIPHER, is one of my favorite books in this series as yet. It’s safe to say I love the Southern Arcana series and I can’t wait till the next installment hits!
Sera eased open the door and tried to smile as her stomach flip-flopped again, this time for an entirely different reason. Julio Mendoza was a beautiful man. Broad and solid, built like a wrestler but graced with the dark good looks of a playboy. And that was only the physical, the shell for all that delicious alpha power. Even a coyote knew what to do in the face of such unchecked magic—roll to her back and pray the wolf felt merciful.
She’d never forget Julio’s fingers rasping over her hair, or the way he’d pulled her close and inhaled her scent. Not sexual, not even sensual. Primal and raw, shapeshifter magic at its most basic. An alpha’s desperate rage and a submissive’s quiet trust.
“Thank you,” she whispered, and her lips tingled. Her whole body felt wild with the urge to climb over the table. Or under it. Curl up against him, stroke and touch and kiss. Rub against him until their scents were unmistakably entwined.
She pressed a finger to his lips. “One more thing. I don’t break, okay? I bend. The rest of you stand strong until you shatter, but I ride the rough spots so I can get back up when they’re over. But sometimes that means I don’t learn, because I never get hurt badly enough to teach me a lesson.”
He was everything she’d known he would be the first time he’d touched her. He was the kind of strong a girl could drown in, but he wouldn’t let her. If she tried, he’d drag her up and tell her to start swimming again. Hell, maybe if she let him, he’d teach her how to fly.
She traced the bridge of his nose with her fingertip and marveled at the simple gesture. Hers. He was hers to touch, to cuddle, all the tiny little things that she’d missed about keeping a man around longer than it took to screw him. She could spend the rest of her life touching him in a hundred ways, drowning in his strength, his love, his scent—
